25.01.2022 Due to the evolving COVID outbreak in NSW, our visitor restrictions have changed. We are currently unable to admit any visitor who has been in the greater Sydney area since Friday 11 December. These changes are to help keep our patients, visitors and staff safe. If you have even mild symptoms, please hold off from visiting anyone in the hospital and get tested immediately. Our Fever Clinic is open 8 am to 6 pm Monday to Sunday.... Other visitor restrictions remain the same for our Fitzroy campus, St Vincent’s on the Park, and St George’s in Kew: Patients can have up to two visitors from one household Maximum duration two hours, once per day Visiting hours are from 3 pm to 7 pm Visitors under 16 years of age are permitted For our residential aged care, the following applies: Patients can have up to two visitors from one household Maximum duration two hours, once per day Visiting hours are from 10 am to 7 pm Visitors under 16 years of age are permitted There are some exemptions to these restrictions based on compassionate grounds by prior arrangement with the manager/nurse in charge.

25.01.2022 This World Hospice and Palliative Care Day we're recognising the wonderful work of our outstanding team. Joan, one of our Palliative Care Nurses shared what she loves most about working at St Vincent's.

24.01.2022 Today, on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honour the memory of trans people whose lives have been lost to hate crimes. To mark the day, a few of our staff gathered with Merrin Wake from The Kindness Pandemic to officially open the Care All Ways Exhibition in the Tunnels of Love under our Fitzroy campus. The exhibition is a wonderful collection of posters and artwork created by trans and gender diverse young people and their families, reflecting on what the idea of 'care' ...means for them. St Vincent's celebrates diversity, acceptance and compassion; to us, anti-trans sentiment is not tolerated and never okay. We are committed to creating a safer space for all people who access our service. #TDOR

23.01.2022 St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne is such a strong and supportive community. I’m inspired daily by my colleagues and the incredible care that our patients receive. Especially this year throughout the global pandemic. 16.01.2022 In the fourth week of Advent we light a final candle. We now have the candles of hope, peace, love and joy burning brightly. Our Chaplain Father Zaher offers this reflection: "In my Christmas preparation I pause to pray for our hospital family. I am inspired by everyone’s kindness and offer an Advent blessing to you all. "This year’s challenges have brought out the best in so many of you so many in our hospital have given and given all year. You are the embodiment of hope, ...peace, love and joy. "I shall pray for your good health and prosperity at Mass this week."

07.01.2022 After 12 months of collaborative work between Geriatric Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery Unit, the Orthogeriatric Service (OGS) has commenced at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne. This service, an extension of the existing Acute Care of the Elderly Unit, will see Geriatric Medicine share responsibility for the care of hip fracture patients over the age of 65 with the Orthopaedic Unit. The service will oversee the entire patient journey, from the time of their arrival in ED, thr...ough to their discharge to home, subacute or residential care. This Geriatrician-led collaboration aims to streamline care, improve length of stay and facilitate quicker access to subacute care, minimising hospital-acquired and other complications. Congratulations to the Geriatric Medicine and Ortho teams, and thank you to the other disciplines involved, including Peri-Operative and General Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics, Rehabilitation Medicine, Endocrinology, Residential In-reach and Physiotherapy.

05.01.2022 In August this year, something very special took place at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. One of our patients, Sarah Foster, married Justin Tham, in a small wedding ceremony on the 11th floor of our main hospital building, with Melbourne stretched out below. The city was in the midst of lockdown, and Sarah was in the midst of treatment for incurable bowel cancer. She and Justin had planned to tie the knot in April but when the pandemic hit, they’d been forced to cancel.... Moved by her situation, the medical team caring for her took matters into their own hands, bringing in staff from all corners of the hospital to help. It’s not every day our staff throw a wedding on hospital grounds in the middle of a pandemic. But it’s not every day you meet a patient like Sarah, whose courage, strength and kindness blew even those who’d known her only a short time away. On 10 November 2020, Sarah passed away at home, surrounded by love. Today the Herald Sun covered Sarah and Justin’s incredible story a story that has made its mark on St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and will be remembered by many of us long into the future.

04.01.2022 In Week Two of Advent as we prepare for Christmas, we light another purple candle. This candle symbolises peace. A reflection from our Chaplain, Father Zaher: Peace means many things to many people. In my life, peace is being safe in a war-torn country like my homeland of Syria.... Peace to a young mother may mean an uninterrupted night’s sleep. To someone with chronic pain, it can be as simple as being able to complete everyday tasks like showering or cooking. To a person suffering substance abuse it could be an hour without craving; for someone experiencing homelessness, perhaps it's finding somewhere safe and warm for the night. Receiving a smile from a stranger or neighbour can bring peace to those of us who are isolated and lonely. Our hospital’s healing ministry gives every one of us permission to seek and grant peace. This week, embrace the moments you are given peace and make time to enable it for others. The peace-loving life of Jesus is my life’s inspiration. May peace be yours, too.

03.01.2022 St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne is home to our state's largest BreastScreen Victoria clinic. Due to the pandemic it's been understandably difficult for many to maintain their routine breast scans. We want to emphasise that it's safe to visit; we are open for bookings and following full COVID-safe protocols. So please, don't delay your appointment any longer. Early detection saves lives.

01.01.2022 2020 has seen a huge increase in telehealth use across healthcare, not just here at St Vincent's, but across Victoria as clinicians and patients find new ways to adapt to stay-at-home restrictions. One team that has seen the benefits of Telehealth are the podiatrists at the High Risk Foot Service, who have taken a giant step forward in providing improved access to regional patients. 01.01.2022 "We see patients at their most vulnerable and every day I witness my colleagues go above and beyond as they reassure their patients with a touch of the hand or with words of comfort. A mask and goggles may cover our face but we can still smile with our eyes." Theresa Comyns has worked as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Operating Suite at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne for nearly 30 years.
